As the first semester drew to a close last week, students inundated my classroom with thoughtful gifts. Stacked on my desk and on various bookshelves throughout the room were gentle reminders that while teaching might feel like a thankless job at times, the work we educators do is truly valued and appreciated in my community.
One of my favorite gifts of all this year was a small packet of fresh ingredients with directions for simmering on the stovetop. In just ten minutes, our home was filled with the smell of Christmastime without the watering eyes and stuffy noses that sometimes accompany home fragrances.
If you’re looking for an inexpensive and safe way to bring some Christmas cheer to your home, look no further!
Christmas Simmering Pot
- 1 lime or lemon, halved
- 1 cup of fresh cranberries
- 3 cinnamon sticks
- 1 tablespoon whole cloves
- Place all ingredients in a two-quart (or larger) sauce pan.
- Add water until the pan is 3/4 full and heat to a simmer over medium-high heat.
- Decrease heat to low and simmer all day, adding water as needed.
*You can “feed” the simmering pot by adding more fruit and spices to it over days at a time or simply discard when finished.
